CORRECTIONS
& NOTES FOR
THE HISTORY OF HUDSON by DON BUTLER |
|
|
We
all know how important Don Butler's History Of Hudson
has been to Hudson Folk since it was first published in 1982. It was
republished in 1992 and is still available from Amazon
and other booksellers. While we use this monumental work as the standard
reference in Hudson matters, it, like any similar research project,
is not without errors. Don Butler has passed now, so we cannot chew
matters over with him. What we can do, is compile fresh research, corrections,
doubts & quibbles and hope that a third corrected edition of The
History Of Hudson will assigned to a new editor at some point. |

Page
71, purple cover, picture caption Geoff Clark - "Some photos are repeated, and others of doubtful authenticity, for instance the pic of a Super Six engine purported to be 1920 on page 71, showing the later Stewart carburettor and separate starter and generator, surely a 1923-'26 model." |
Page
102, purple cover, picture caption Paul O'Neil - The picture shows an Anderson bodied Coupe, not a Pioneer Coupe. Source - I own one of the Coupes and can see the makers nameplate. |

102, purple cover, picture caption Paul O'Neil - Pioneer was a competitor, not a successor company. Source - Discussing and printed material from the Sidney Ohio, location of both Anderson & Pioneer. |
Page
114, purple cover, picture caption Paul O'Neil - The Hudson Roadster with the Biddle & Smart body was made with steel panels over a wooden structure, not the aluminum panels mentioned. Further, it looks like the aft ot turtledeck portion was sourced from Hudson as this looks to be a dead ringer for the Coupe turtledeck. The Roadster body looks to have had the steel structure replace by wood. Source - I own a 1928 Hudson Roadster project. There is no doubt about the rust! |

1913,
1914 & 1915 Sections
Bill Cohen - In each year, Butler lists starting and ending serial numbers - implying that all numbers were used. This is misleading, most notably the apparent "over-lap" of 1914 and 1915 Model 54 serial numbers. Please see the attached word transcription of Hudson literature, with Total #'s column added by me. Source - copies of Hudson Motors Hand Book Insert No. 109 and No. 117 |
